Program:
This complex project, housing facilities as
varied as the international design center
Nagoya, city of Nagoya youth cultural
center, an office tower, and extensive retail
space, is designed around a dynamically
scaled central atrium. The building’s major
public spaces and lobbies all front the
atrium through a maze of stepped
balconies and glass screens, eliminating
many of the typical circulation balconies
that front more conventional atriums. The
project’s complex geometries are
generated by layering careful responses to
the urban context (traffic flow, sight lines,
setbacks, height limits) over a strategy of
articulating the project’s primary components.
